Track description

Istria, the largest Croatian peninsula, is blessed with 4 types of soil combined into the unique wealth of this region. In the heart of its northwestern part you will find Brtonigla – Istria in a miniature! In this small town, on the slopes of hills covered with vineyards, 4 Istrian lands meet – white, grey, black and red. From the slopes of the mountain massifs of Učka and Ćićarija descends white Istria with its stony soil. The gray flysch area of central Istria is made of marl, sandstone and softer limestone, while the black soil is the most fertile, rich in humus. Terra rossa, is a special red-brown or yellow-red colored soil made up of clay, finer and coarser sand and dust particles and is most typical in the Mediterranean climate. The Istrian malvasia is the undisputed queen, as it is called here, of these fertile areas. The most widespread in Istria, the white autochthonous variety has preserved its growing tradition throughout the centuries, and excellent winemakers have created better and better-known wines from its grapes over the years. Sources say that the Malvasia variety is at least 2,000 years old, and to date about thirty of them have been known throughout the Mediterranean. If you visit Istria, you must taste the charms of Istrian malvasia, wines with a special character. But if you come to Brtonigla, you will have the opportunity to experience something completely different: you will discover all its secrets, the secrets of wines from the 4 soils of the Quattro terre”.

Track itinerary

Start of at the entrance of the Camping Park Umag then turn right on the unpaved road through Radini and Lukon towards Brtonigla, the “wine town” with two exceptional taverns, Astarea and Morgan (Bracanija), as well as the restaurant San Rocco where you can experience the unique flavours and riches of Istrian cuisine. From Brtonigla town square take the road for Grobice and you will soon reach Baredine from where you descend to the valley of the river Mirna. At the bridge and the main road turn right towards Antenal. After 1.8 km turn right and uphill to Sv. Dionizije, then through Serbani, Nova Vas, Pavići and Druškovići arrive to Turina and continue to Marinčići. From there, along the paved road through Fiorini continue to Karigador. After that you are back at Camping Umag entrance.

Track description

This route leads you through the green hinterland of Umag and invites you to an authentic experience of Istria then and now, connecting a number of valuable points, interesting to different age groups. Families will be glad to stop by the Goli vrh ranch and take a look at the horses at play, try riding or make an appointment for a riding school, while lovers of adventure and historical stories will have their imaginations fired up by Buje, an idyllic and picturesque town high on a hill. With its two bell towers and a pentagonal tower, Buje dominates northwestern Istria and offers a view all the way to the Alps. Highlights are the old core with its magnificent church and belfry-observatory, but also the Ethnographic Museum with its display of old Istrian cuisine, an oil mill and a forge. Buje is not lagging behind in culinary sense either – try the specialties of restaurants and taverns in the old town center, and visit the wineries and olive growers who have placed their cellars and tasting rooms right among the walls of the old town. On the way back, stop in Volpia and refresh yourself at the popular rural hotel La Parenzana. Here, the history of the former Parenzana railway, which connected Poreč and Trieste, whose route has been preserved today as a pedestrian and bicycle path, is revealed. The road also leads past the beautiful casino hotel Mulino and along the left bank of the Dragonja river, located on the very border of Croatia and Slovenia.
In its penultimate part, the path offers a wonderful view of Savudrijska Vala and the Piran Salt Flats, while on Crveni Vrh, with a little caution, you can stop next to the large golf course and look at the playground that fits perfectly into the natural environment of hills and valleys, already crowned with design awards.

Track itinerary

Start from the E-bike rental shop to tourist village Katoro heading towards Murine, through Galici and Saint Vid reaching Vilanija. In Vilanija proceed to Vardica and Goli vrh following the directions turning left to the woods. We pass under the high road Istrian epsilon and continue along the fence until the asphalt where we turn left again. After some hundred meters turn right to the macadam path where we will reach Buje close to the Cupiga hill. From Buje the path goes downhill to Vinela and then right to Jurcanija, Volpija, Kastel and Kaldanija until hotel Mulino. Along the Parenzana track proceed to Kanegra then towards Crveni vrh and through Medigija and Kortina back to Katoro and finish at E-bike rental shop.

From the western part of the Istrian peninsula, the route leads to the very heart of Istria, and among the many places on its way it passes through Vižinada, Ponte Porton and the magical Motovun, which is reached by a picturesque climb. In the second part of this 151-kilometer trail, you drive through Karojba, Tinjan and Sveti Petar u Šumi, and then through Kanfanar and Bale. It contains many interesting localities where you can enjoy a beautiful view or take a break with refreshments in Istrian taverns. Some of them will remind you of the past with their appearance, and in each you will have the opportunity to taste the specialties of traditional local cuisine. World famous Istrian wines can be tasted in many wineries along the path so take your time and enjoy.

Track itinerary

It is a rather demanding trail with a total height difference of 2285 meters. The highest point is located at the 70th kilometer of the trail and reaches 369 meters above sea level, while the lowest is located at 5 meters above sea level. The track is driven entirely on asphalt, and the estimated time to master it is 5 to 6 hours without stops. The climb that starts at kilometer 60 contains an extremely steep one-kilometer section that in some parts exceeds a 14% gradient, but with your e-bike it will be like a “piece of cake”. The descent that begins at the 70th kilometer contains several serpentines that are noticeable in time, but definitely require caution.
